IS SOMETHING IN THE AIR?
The EPA has indicated that levels of air pollution inside homes and workplaces may be two to three times higher than the air outside. With Americans spending as much as 90% of their time indoors, this figure is a cause of grave concern. Even more troubling, one of the least-known indoor air pollutants is also one of the most common: mold.
OUTDOOR SPORES
Mold is a fungus --- like mushrooms, toadstools, and yeast --- that plays an important role in the ecosystem. It reproduces by releasing tiny particles, called spores, into the air. When spores land on a damp surface, they grow and ultimately produce more spores. In some cases, mold is easy to detect: dark circles or white thread-like filaments are common sights in areas of water damage. Some types of mold, like mildew, give off a musty, unpleasant odor that can alert homeowners to its presence. More often than not, however, mold grows out of sight, accompanied by no particular smell... and therein lies a serious problem.
INVISIBLE THREAT
When mold spores are outdoors, we typically breathe them without noticing, much like pollen and thousands of other, small particles. The air in our homes, however, is refreshed far less often. Even the most well-ventilated homes may encounter problems --- ductwork is one of the places where mold thrives.
This is simply a short-list --- anywhere there is moisture in your home, there may be mold.
A GROWING CONCERN
Mold spores are common allergen, affecting (primarily) the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. Common symptoms of mold exposure, even in small amounts, include:
BREAKING THE MOLD
Selling - Because everyone's level of immunity sensitivity is different, hidden mold could make your buyer extremely ill. Having your home professionally tested for mold is the responsible thing to do.
Buying - If the home you're thinking of buying has mold, ask for a mold inspection and speak to your agent about adding "mold clause" in your contract.
CRAWLSPACE SOLUTIONS
The seven-ply Crawlspace Solutions liner seals off earthen areas from which moisture rises. No moisture, no mold - your crawlspace, and your inside air, stay clean and clear. Ask your Atlantic Heating & Cooling representative about Crawlspace Solutions for your home!
INSPECTION PROCESS
Professional mold inspection is performed by trained specialists with specific equipment. Following are the most common elements of mold inspection.
Visual Inspection
Includes a survey of the home for moisture stains on ceilings, walls, floors, and under counters, Crawlspaces, basements, attics, and HVAC systems are also inspected. Special equipment is used to inspect areas that are difficult to see, normally.
Air Sampling
Air samples are taken throughout the house, inside and outside. This ensures the analysis not only of different locations, but different conditions.
Tape/Swab Sampling
When mold is discovered, a sample is taken with a cotton swab or strip of tape. These samples are sent to a laboratory where the mold can be identified.
